Replacing Synthetic Fragrances in your home

The dangers of using synthetic fragrances in our homes is very alarming. Easily accessible & advertised on various platforms, without warning labels, its scary how many homes are using them, without even knowing how harmful they are.

I used to be non the wiser. I just wanted a nice smelling home! I didn’t realise how harmful they are to our bodies.

“A National Academy of Sciences points out some vital facts: About 95 percent of chemicals used in synthetic fragrances are derived from petroleum (crude oil). They include benzene derivatives (carcinogenic), aldehydes, toluene and many other known toxic chemicals linked to cancer, birth defects, central nervous system disorders and allergic reactions.  Unfortunately, 30 years later, toxic ingredients continue turn up in products we use and breathe in on a daily basis. Some of the worst toxic ingredients used in lotions, shampoos, laundry detergents, cleaning products and so much more include synthetic scents, often listed as on labels as the elusive “fragrance.” And many on the list are known or suspected endocrine disruptors – compounds that tinker with hormonal health that can trigger weight gain and even set you up for diseases decades down the line.

Avoiding the dangers of synthetic scents is crucial. It’s something I need you to share with your family and friends. When a company puts “fragrance” on the label, don’t be tricked. This is a catch-all term actually can stand for thousands of different ingredients (literally, at least 3000). And when you use a product containing “fragrance” or “parfum,” all of those mysterious ingredients are absorbed right into your bloodstream. These ingredients are predominantly made from chemicals and are just outright toxic for your health in so many ways.”

Using essential oils in a diffuser is a fantastic way to get your home smelling amazing, but the oils also purify and cleanse the air, making it a much healthier breathing environment. Plus you get the extra benefits of the oils supporting your moods and emotions. it is very important to make sure you are using only the best quality essential oils, hence why I only use and trust doTERRA.

doTERRA’s body care products make it so easy to switch up synthetic chemical filled lotions, shampoo & conditioners, body washes & skin care to plant based, quality products. I love that I don’t have to second guess any of the products, and they are safe to use on my childrens’ sensitive skin.

I also make all my own cleaning sprays using essential oils, and doTERRA’s On Guard Cleaner Concentrate. I literally use these to clean my whole entire house!! You don’t need toxic bleach to have a clean home. Trust me, I used to use it. And get the awful headaches. bleach actually just whitens the mould instead of removing it. Hand over heart the On Guard Cleaner Concentrate works better. I even used it to clean my oven.

I just made the most delish smelling linen/sleep spray & toilet spray using these continuous mist bottles from dōTERRA’s USA store (all wholesale members have access to ordering from here, they have some extra items that we don’t have here yet).

These sprays are super easy to make, are NON-TOXIC, and have side benefits of emotional support 🙌🏼

For the sleep time sheet/linen spray, I used: 20 drops each of Lavender Peace (the Restful blend), Clary Sage & Cedarwood with a tablespoon of witch hazel (this acts as a preservative & keeps the aroma in the air longer) and then filled to the top with water. These oils are extremely calming, and all promote a peaceful nights sleep. Cedarwood is great for keeping the little bugs away too!

In the toilet spray I used 20 drops each of green mandarin, peppermint, lemon & Purify (the cleansing blend). With a tablespoon of witch hazel & topped with water.

The mist bottles spray put a super fine mist. Both sprays smell amazing!! Just give the bottle a little shake before using.

Happy DIY-ing!
